Clareville Water Treatment Plant shortlisted for "Engineering Project of the Year 2010"
Veolia Water Ireland's flagship project in contention
The winner of the "Engineering Project of the Year 2010" will be announced at the upcoming Engineering Excellence Awards on 5th November. Clareville Water Treatment plant has been shortlisted for this accolade along with seven other high profile engineering projects from across Ireland.
The project challenge was to provide a modern up-to-date facility on the existing site at Clareville, while maintaining full daily production of treated water for Limerick during the construction phase. Limerick City Council and their representative RPS Consulting Engineers, engaged the Veolia Water Water/Ascon(BAM) Consortium to meet the long-term challenge. After a 36 month complete refurbishment and expansion, the plant was officially opened on 25th June 2010 and Veolia Water will operate the plant under the terms of the Public Private Partnership for a period of 20 years.
Veolia Water patented technologies were key to the design of the new upgraded facility. The highly compact and efficient ActifloTM clarification system coupled with DusenfloTM high rate filtration enabled increased production levels from 51.5 megalitres per day in 2007 to 87 megalitres per day in 2010. To meet the expanding needs of the city and surrounding areas into Limerick and Clare counties, the plant has been designed to facilitate expansion to a capacity of 140 megalitres per day, which is the 30-year horizon demand on the Clareville Plant.
